ÚLTIMOS AVANCES EN LA QUÍMICA Y ACTIVIDADES BACTERIOLÓGICAS EN LAS PLANTAS MEDICINALES= Medicinal plants, last advances on chemistry and bacteria activities on the medicinal herbs

1) Albania has a very diverse climate from subtropical to continental and high relief variation, has a very rich flora.  The Albanian flora comprises 3250 plant species or about 30% of the European flora, with about 30 endemic and 180 subendemic species.  More than 300 species are arom. or medicinal plants, which are very important economic natural resources.  Further, they play an important role in everyday life.  Of all these species, 68 species are endangered (EN).  The employment of the new data anal. technique and statistical software provide a good support to conduct research in the field of medicinal and arom. plants.

2) This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of exts. (aq., ethanolic and essential oil) from Satureja montana and to characterize the chem. compn. of its essential oil.  Satureja montana L. essential oil had relatively high antimicrobial activities against the 7 species of bacteria tested.  In contrast, aq. exts. did not reveal antibacterial activity, and the ethanol ext. was not effective against Salmonella typhimurium.  The major volatile constituents of the essential oil were carvacrol (306 g L-1), thymol (141 g L-1), and carvacrol Me ether (63 g L-1).  The strongest antioxidant capacity was obtained with the hot water exts. of S. montana, whereas the plant essential oil revealed the highest phenolic content.  The findings indicate that the bioactive exts. of S. montana have strong potential for use as natural antimicrobials and antioxidants in the preservation of processed food.  Copyright Ó 2011 Society of Chem. Industry.

3) This research evaluated the antimicrobial effect of the winter savory (Satureja montana L.) essential oil (EO) against Clostridium perfringens type A (ATCC 3624) inoculated in mortadella-type sausages formulated with different levels of sodium nitrite (NaNO2: 0 ppm, 100 ppm and 200 ppm) in addn. to EO at concns. of 0.0%, 0.78%, 1.56% and 3.125% stored at 25 °C for 30 days.  The EO extd. by hydrodistn. and analyzed by gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry (CG-MS) was tested in vitro using an agar well diffusion method for detn. of min. inhibitory concn. (MIC) on C. perfringens.  According to compositional anal. of the winter savory EO, 26 chem. compds. were identified, and the major constituents were thymol (28.99%), p-cymene (12.00%), linalool (11.00%) and carvacrol (10.71%).  The results obtained showed that EO applied at a concn. of 1.56%, which was defined as the MIC, exhibited antimicrobial activity against C. perfringens in the in vitro assays, and the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed structural damage and cell lysis of C. perfringens caused by EO treatment.  A synergistic effect between NaNO2 and EO was obsd.  In mortadella-type sausages formulated with 100 ppm of NaNO2 and EO at all concns. tested, the population of target microorganisms was reduced (p £ 0.05) compared to control samples during all storage period.  This data suggests the potential combined use of savory EO and minimal amts. of the synthetic additive, NaNO2 to control C. perfringens in mortadella, which goes according to current market trends, where consumers are requesting natural products.
